No. 4: Phosphoric acid, a market in which Mersen is consolidating its leadership by offering dedicated solutions
The previous edition of CL Magazine presented the opportunities for the Group in the phosphoric acid market, which is characterized by extremely exacting production conditions. This fourth edition considers more specifically the graphite- and noble metals-based product range offered by Mersen to chemicals companies producing phosphoric acid.
MERSEN’S RANGE OF EQUIPMENT COVERS THE ENTIRE PHOSPHORIC ACID PRODUCTION PROCESS
- Grinding of the phosphate: the body of the mill is equipped with a revolving shell with abrasion- and corrosion-resistant internal lining, as manufactured by our Xianda facility in China.
- Attack of the phosphate with sulfuric acid : the sulfuric acid must be diluted in advance so that it can attack the phosphate properly. Mersen provides solutions for these specific and demand- ing applications with suitable sulfuric acid dilution vessels. These dilution vessels are delivered on a turn-key basis. All the components
heat exchanger, dilution vessel, connection tubes, pipework and instrumentation are assembled in a steel structure at the Group’s workshops and delivered as a skid. - To ensure filtration, i.e. the separation of the solid gypsum from the phosphoric acid solution, a series of filtration devices is used: washing jet banks, vacuum boxes, perforated sheets, etc. The Group’s workshops use cutting-edge technologies to manufacture and weld this equipment.
- Mersen supplies metal heat exchangers for steam converters.
- For the concentration of phosphoric acid, Mersen supplies noble metal reheaters to reheat the acid and tube or large block heat exchangers in graphite.

Mersen has developed exclusive products used in the phosphoric acid process, such as: - Graphilor® 3: this is Mersen’s ultra-fine grade isostatic graphite with special impregnation that rolls backs the limits in terms of corrosion and extends the life of heat exchangers. - Rigilor®: this is graphite strengthened with carbon fibers, which can double the heat exchangers’ mechanical attributes and multiply by six their resilience to abrasion. - 6m-long joint free tubes: these can be used both to increase their resilience and lower production costs.
With over 200 heat exchangers installed around the world over the past five years, Mersen remains the leader in graphite equipment for the phosphoric acid industry.
