Energy

The fast-track development of alternative energies–the principal solution to the challenge posed by the unrelenting growth in energy demand given the depletion of fossil fuel reserves and climate change–makes the invention of technological advances enhancing their competitiveness an absolute imperative.

Our positions – our developments

Mersen is investing on every front, with the aim of deriving one-third of its sales from this market by 2012:

• Conventional energy sources - Approved by the principal manufacturers of turbo-generators, our fusegear has established our leadership in equipment for thermal power plants.

• Wind - Our multiple solutions, encompassing signal transmission, brushes and brushholders, fuses and coolers, have enabled us to become a leading supplier to the wind energy segment, in both the original-equipment and replacement markets.

• Solar - Our pure HCL turn-key systems are used to produce trichlorosilane (TCS) a key component for the manufacture of polysilicon. Our ultra-pure graphite equipment enables manufacturers of polysilicon, the principal component in photovoltaic panels, to increase their efficiency while cutting their costs. By helping to unlock competitive gains, we are playing a key role in the development of this industry.

• Nuclear - Since it boasts expertise in the procedures and regulations specific to this form of alternative energy, Mersen has established itself in the design of advanced technology equipment used in auxiliary reactor circuits.

Transportation

Faced with increasingly strong demand for mobility solutions, particularly in Asia, the only viable solution over the long term is the development of mass urban transit and rail systems that require electrical systems delivering higher performance and reliability.

Our positions – our developments

In the tramway, subways and trains segment, we provide devices for rail infrastructure as well as rolling stock. Our applications also encompass electrical protection (coolers, fuses and contactors) and current transmission (third-rail shoes, pantograph strips, motor brushes, etc.).

We are also present in the aerospace industry for which we design composite material components and electrical command systems.

Chemicals and pharmaceuticals

The influence of the chemicals industry is all-pervasive, ranging from delivering the fertilizer needed to meet the challenge of food production around the world, to satisfying steadily growing demand for everyday consumer goods. With longer life expectancy, the pharmaceutical industry also needs to meet the growing demand for healthcare solutions.

Our positions – our developments

We design made-to-measure graphite and noble metal equipment that can withstand high temperatures and corrosive fluids. Our turnkey reactors, stirrers and mixers and heat exchangers represent systems in their own right.

Thanks to this global expertise, we have established world leadership in anti-corrosion activities, which we are consolidating in strategic markets such as Asia and the Middle East.

Electronics

From microprocessors through to LEDs, semiconductors are constantly being used in new applications. With their increasing complexity, electronic power installations require an ever growing number of devices protecting against voltage surges.

Our positions – our developments

We are active at the early stages in the production of semiconductors through the design of the high value-added graphite required for their manufacture.

In power electronics, however, our industrial fuse and cooler solutions are employed for maintenance and replacement purposes.

This difference notwithstanding, our specialized expertise guarantees a bright future in both these very buoyant niches.

Process industries

Process industries must evolve towards achieving greater energy efficiency and support efforts to make them safer.

Our positions – our developments

Processing industries, such as steel-making, paper and glass production, have always been our leading sector of activity. Our brushes, industrial fuses, contactors, process equipment and custom-tailored graphite components are employed on production lines right around the world.

Each line has its own distinguishing features. The breadth of our production and distribution network brings us as close as possible to our customers and enables us to meet their most specialized requirements as swiftly as possible.
