Sintered silicon carbide product

With the recent acquisition of Boostec, Mersen has acquired unique expertise in the field of precision ceramic using silicon carbide.

Owing to its extensive experience in space optical instrumentation, this manufacturing unit, which is unique in the world, produces large complex-shaped parts measuring up to 3.5 m in diameter.Furthermore, these space instrumentation projects have led to the development of novel techniques for assembling SiC parts including bonding, brazing and bolting.

In addition to these skilled processes, the unit advises and assists customers in designing their silicon carbide components.

Sintered silicon carbide has several key advantages that afford it unique properties:

  • A highly pure composition without a secondary phase.
  •  Isotropic physical properties.
  •  Very high mechanical strength and rigidity (420 Gpa).
  •  Insensitivity to mechanical fatigue.
  •  Very high thermal conductivity (180 W/m/K).
  •  Low coefficient of thermal expansion.
  •  Very high resistance in corrosive environments.

Potential applications:

  •  Space and ground-based optical instrumentation.
  • Exchangers and microreactors.
  •  Friction: mechanical seals and bearings.
  •  Equipment for the semi-conductor industry.
  •  Ballistic amour.
  •  Metallurgy of non-ferrous metals.
