Mersen Surge protection and specific disconector to ensure continuity of protection and service
Surge Protection

SPD + SSD Compact protection solution

Designed to ensure continuity of protection and service

  • Electrical installations are becoming more demanding than ever. Increased equipment sensitivity, higher system availability requirements and growing installation complexity mean that surge protection solutions must go beyond standard protection performance.

That is why Mersen has developed a fully coordinated protection solution combining the new Surge-Trap® K range and a dedicated SPD Specific Disconnector (SSD), designed to operate together as one compact coordinated system.

  • The problem with conventional surge protection setups

Traditional surge protection architectures rely on coordinating the SPD with a generic back-up protection device. Incorrect dimensioning or coordination uncertainty can lead to premature fuse operation, unnecessary downtime or loss of protection continuity.

In some situations, the back-up fuse may trip before the SPD reaches its actual end of life, leaving the installation exposed to the next surge event without the operator being aware of it.

These limitations increase installation complexity and reduce overall system reliability.

Surge-Trap® K and its dedicated SSD have been specifically engineered to operate together as one fully coordinated system.

Unlike conventional setups, both devices are designed, manufactured and validated by the same and unique expert, Mersen, mastering overcurrent and overvoltage protection. This guarantees optimized coordination under real installation conditions.

  • THE SOLUTION

Key benefits of the SPD+SSD solution

    .

  • High system robustness — Isccr up to 100 kA

Because both devices are designed and validated together by Mersen, the SPD + SSD combination guarantees short-circuit withstand capability up to 100 kA.

This coordinated architecture ensures safe and reliable operation even in demanding electrical environments and under extreme fault conditions.

  • Up to 50% panel space saving

Thanks to its compact coordinated architecture, the SPD + SSD combination can reduce panel space up to 50% compared to conventional solutions.

This enables more efficient cabinet layouts and easier integration into modern electrical panels.

  • Easier and safer dimensioning

The dedicated SSD eliminates sizing uncertainty and simplifies the back-up protection selection process. This reduces engineering complexity, speeds up installation and minimizes the risk of coordination errors.

To further simplify selection, a single SSD K1 solution covers the entire Surge-Trap® K1 12.5 kA range, while a single SSD K1H solution covers the complete Surge-Trap® K1H 25 kA range.

  • Complete diagnosis and maintenance

The system integrates end-of-life indication for both SPD and SSD, improving maintenance planning and operational visibility.

This helps reduce unexpected downtime and supports continuity of service.

Suitable to be safely opened under operation.

  • COMPLIANT WITH THE STANDARDS

Designed for today. Ready for tomorrow.

Surge-Trap® K and SSD comply with IEC 61643-11 and are already aligned with upcoming prIEC TS 61643-06 requirements.

Developed and manufactured in Europe, specifically in Spain, the solution reflects Mersen’s commitment to quality, sustainability and compliance with evolving industry standards.

  • The most reliable protection solution

Surge-Trap® K and SSD represent a new generation of compact coordinated surge protection solutions.
By combining Mersen expertise in both overvoltage and overcurrent protection, the SPD + SSD system delivers safer coordination, simplified installation, optimized panel integration and enhanced continuity of protection and service.
