    Mersen Solutions for Data Centers

Mersen enables the safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of power from the grid to the GPU, helping data center operators build, operate, and scale today’s infrastructure while preparing for tomorrow’s AI-driven architectures.

Artificial intelligence is transforming the data center industry. As AI workloads continue to grow, operators are facing unprecedented increases in power demand, rack power density, cooling requirements, and electrical complexity. Higher-performance processors and GPUs require more electrical power per rack, while emerging high-density computing environments demand highly reliable and efficient power infrastructure.

Mersen helps data center operators, OEMs, engineering firms, and critical power providers design and build reliable, efficient, and scalable electrical systems—from the utility grid to the server rack and GPU.

With decades of expertise in electrical protection, power distribution, thermal management, capacitors, and energy storage, Mersen provides technologies that support the evolving requirements of mission-critical, hyperscale, colocation, edge, and AI data center infrastructure.

  • Meeting the Challenges of AI-Driven Data Centers

The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is changing every aspect of data center design and operation.

Higher-power GPUs and processors are increasing rack power density and placing new demands on data center electrical infrastructure. As power density increases, so do cooling requirements, electrical losses, and the need for highly reliable power delivery.

At the same time, data center operators are exploring higher-voltage DC architectures, advanced power conversion technologies, solid-state transformers, and new approaches to improve overall energy efficiency.

These challenges require more than individual components. They require an integrated understanding of the complete electrical infrastructure and the relationship between power distribution, electrical protection, power conversion, thermal management, and energy storage.

Mersen has a long history of supporting customers in addressing these challenges with solutions designed to improve power reliability, optimize thermal performance, enhance electrical safety, and prepare facilities for future electrical architectures.

  • Building the Data Center of Tomorrow

The electrical architecture of data centers continues to evolve.

As the industry moves toward higher-voltage DC distribution, solid-state transformers, silicon carbide power electronics, advanced liquid cooling, and increasingly dense AI and GPU clusters, data center infrastructure must be designed with flexibility, scalability, efficiency, and reliability in mind.

Mersen is actively supporting these industry transitions by developing technologies that enable future-ready electrical systems while participating in initiatives that help shape tomorrow’s data center standards.

By understanding both current and emerging data center architectures, Mersen helps customers confidently prepare for the next generation of digital infrastructure—from traditional critical power systems to high-density AI computing environments.

Every data center depends on resilient electrical systems that operate continuously under demanding conditions.

  • Frequently asked questions:

    • Why are fuses critical in data centers?

Fuses provide reliable short-circuit and overload protection with high interrupting ratings (AIR/IC). In data centers, they help maintain uptime by isolating faults rapidly (typically in less than ½ cycle), limiting let-through energy (I²t), and preventing arc flash propagation in accordance with IEC 60269 and UL 248 standards.

    • How do surge protective devices (SPDs) improve reliability?

SPDs (per IEC 61643 and UL 1449) mitigate transient overvoltages caused by lightning, utility switching, or internal load changes. By clamping or diverting surge energy to ground, they protect servers, UPS systems, and networking hardware, reducing the likelihood of downtime or catastrophic failures.

    • What is the protection coordination strategy between fuses and SPDs?

Fuses protect against sustained overcurrents and short-circuits, while SPDs address transient surges. Coordination is essential: fuses must not operate during a surge event unless the SPD fails. Correct selection ensures the SPD’s maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) and short-circuit current rating (SCCR) are compatible with the fuse and system design.

    • What are best practices for maintenance?

      • Replace fuses after operation with the correct type and rating.
      • Inspect SPDs regularly, as MOV-based devices degrade over time or after significant surge events.
      • Implement monitoring systems for SPDs (status indicators, remote signaling).
      • Follow NFPA 70B recommended practices for preventive maintenance.
